Here’s an excellent start on the many different museums, historic sites and theaters that you don’t want to miss during your trip.

Pinacoteca Do Estado

If you’re looking for a wide range of artwork, from traditional to contemporary, plan a visit to Pinacoteca do Estado. The museum has a static exhibit and a rotating exhibit that features different aspects of Brazilian artwork and history, including exhibits about contemporary travelers, Brazilian engraving and a look at the immigrants who came to Brazil. There is a sculpture garden on the museum’s grounds, as well as a small cafe within the museum itself. If you plan a visit on a Saturday, make sure to get there early because entry to the museum is free and it does get quite crowded.

Teatro Municipal

If you’re looking to spend some time in a theater, take a visit to Teatro Municipal. The outside architecture is gorgeous and the inside recently went through a renovation, which means it’s just as beautiful on the inside. Upcoming performances include Experimental Repertory Orchestra and Choir Paulistano, Gotterdammerung, Palleras et Mellsande and Violanta. Tickets are priced depending on the performance and can be purchased by calling the Box Office.

The museum’s exhibits are all in Portuguese, however even non-speakers can appreciate the sounds and tone of the language. Admission costs just $6, but teachers, children under 10 and seniors can get in free. There is no admission charge on Saturdays.

Catavento Cultural

If you’re traveling with children, consider a visit to Catavento Cultural. Kids can have fun creating life size bubbles, climbing the rock wall, learn about the planets and even take a flying 3D tour of Rio. Tickets are $6, but young children, students, seniors and people with special needs are all half price. It’s said that the neighborhood can be a little rough, so many visitors recommend taking a taxi or parking in the guarded parking lot.
